Listening to Yahoo Radio one day, I came across a song that I just couldn’t get out of my head. It was Peter Gunn, performed by Sarah Vaughn. But since it’s Yahoo Radio, there is no repeating or re-listening – hard for me to get my fix! Later that week I walked by the TV in my office suite and heard the song minus the vocals. I immediately stopped to watch and was surprised to see it was an ad for the Chevy Impala (my co-workers were confused by me adding lyrics to a Chevy commercial). I’ve heard it in at least two different Impala ads. You can recognize it by the female vocal at the end singing “I’m going bye, bye…”

I started a two-week Napster trial and the first song I searched for was Peter Gunn. Two weeks later, I still can’t get enough. 1:53 seconds of pure fun.

Peter Gunn
Music by Henry Mancini
Lyrics by Jay Livingston and Ray Evans

Every night your line is busy
All that buzzing makes me dizzy
Couldn’t count on all my fingers
All the dates you had with swingers

Bye, bye
Bye, baby
I’m gonna kiss you goodbye and go right through that doorway

So long
I’m leaving
This is the last time we’ll meet on the street going your way

Don’t look surprised
You know you buttered your bread
So now it’s fair you should stare at the back of my head

If you write a letter to me
My former friend don’t you end with an R.S.V.P.

I’m going bye, bye
I’m moving
Tomorrow I may be splittin’ to Britain or Norway

I’m saying bye, bye
Bye, baby

Now that I heard all that jazzing
Whereas I have had it
I’ve had it
I’m through now
With you now

So baby it’s au revouir
Adios
Ciao ciao
Goodbye!

I transposed these from Sarah Vaughn’s performance, since I couldn’t find the full lyrics anywhere and really wanted to know them all. Thanks to SpaceAgePop.com for deciphering the line about buttered bread – I never would have gotten that.

A slight modification to post number 2: The
song is “Bye-Bye”, which has lyrics added
to the Peter Gunn theme, which had earlier
    been composed by Henri Mancini.

Does anyone happen to have any of the
Chevy Impala ads that had this for the
audio background? Even just an audio file
    would be welcome.

P.S.: Just noticed both the above posts
are from April 26. It’s a bittersweet day
    for me, actually.

The song is called Peter Gunn. Sarah Vaughn’s version is the only one I’d heard that actually uses any lyrics.

Oh, thanks God, finally I’ve found the lyrics (or a part of them) !!! Thank YOU :)
Once I was in a shop and I recognized that the song which was playing at that moment, was sung by Sarah Vaughan. I took my mobile and dropped some lines (some phrases). Now I was looking for lyrics, but no results found. I wonder, what the name of the song? Would be nice to have it. I’ve heard the song only once..
